Meet Moonlight and Starlight: A Unique Dolphin Duo

In September 2019, the Island became the backdrop for a heartwarming story when a newborn bottlenose dolphin was captured on film here. The mother, previously known to be part of the Bottlenose dolphin community in Moray Firth, introduced her calf to Manx waters. This calf, a female, was lovingly named Starlight by our community during the Covid lockdown. Since then, Moonlight, the mother, and Starlight, her calf, have made the waters of the Isle of Man their home.

Moonlight and Starlight represent a rare phenomenon in the dolphin world: a 'solitary pair' that is always seen together, apart from any larger group. Their unique bond has led them to develop highly effective hunting techniques, showcasing their exceptional adaptability and intelligence.
