* According to folklore a holly tree laden with rich red berries is an indication of a cold harsh winter ahead. Many of us notice holly only in winter, but its value to wildlife goes beyond Christmas: bees visit its flowers for nectar and pollen, and many species of bird nest in holly using its spiny leaves for protection. The Holly tree is one of the most beloved, respected trees in Celtic mythology and is the evergreen twin of the Oak. It is said, that whilst the Oak was the controller of the light half of the year, the Holly tree controlled the dark, winter months.*
