The Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is characterised by its reddish-brown coat, bushy tail & ear tufts. In their favoured habitats of mixed broadleaf and coniferous woodland, they have a source of food all year-round. However, seeing them leap gracefully from one branch to another is an unforgettable yet increasingly scarce spectacle.

Red Squirrels have experienced one of the most severe declines among all UK mammals, primarily attributed to the introduction of non-native grey squirrels in the early 20th century. Evidence shows that without conservation management, Red Squirrels are at risk of becoming extinct in England and Scotland.
